The Flooring Series: What type of flooring is right for hotels?

When looking for a hotel for the night the flooring may not be the first thing people think about, but it will be if it’s the wrong type or is dirty and worn. Whether people are travelling for business or pleasure, a good night’s sleep is one of the main things that will make them come back next time instead of choosing a competitor. To get a good night’s sleep rooms need to be comfortable and clean. And this is where flooring plays a part. There are four key areas that you need to consider which will see high volumes of footfall and which customers will see, as well as the back-office areas and kitchens. We delve into them and what the best types of flooring are for them.

Entrances and reception areas

The first thing customers will see and the highest trafficked part of a hotel. Suitable flooring will be easy to clean, non-slip, hard-wearing and aesthetically pleasing. Options include ceramic tiles, stone or vinyl, depending on the style and design of the hotel. Tiles are the most expensive but also the longest lasting option, while vinyl can mimic any wood look to blend in well with the hotel’s design. It is also durable and easy to maintain, and cheaper than ceramic tiles.

Corridors and bedrooms

Traditionally, flooring in these areas was primarily carpet for its noise-dampening properties and luxurious feel. While it is still found in many a hotel room and corridor the downsides are that it can wear quickly – particularly in heavily-used corridors – and can show up stains. It is, however, a relatively cheap flooring option and if carpet tiles are used they can be replaced on those worn or stained areas without excessive cost. More and more, though, vinyl and laminate are used in rooms and corridors for that more modern feel, ease of maintenance, and while more expensive to install will not require replacement as frequently.

Bathrooms

Hotel bathrooms need to have safety or non-slip flooring that is also hygienic and easily cleaned. Laminate, vinyl, or tiles are most often used in bathrooms for these reasons and where necessary can be treated to ensure they are water resistant given the high levels of humidity and likelihood of spills.

Dining areas

Whether it’s a breakfast room or a full restaurant, dining areas will have high footfall on a daily basis and could need frequent cleaning throughout the day. Vinyl is a great choice here as it comes in a wide variety of colours and designs, is easy to maintain and resistant to spills. It can also be treated to be non-slip if required.

Kitchens

As with any commercial kitchen, flooring will need to be safe and hygienic. Aesthetics are less important than functionality as guests do not use or see them and the safety of staff is paramount. Rubber flooring or laminate are excellent choices here as they are non-slip, hard-wearing, very easy to clean and waterproof.

I would avoid this firm due to the very poor attitude of one of their staff. If you're in a branded van, you're still representing the company.
